Tiny yet powerful, a capillary tube is a thin and streamlined stainless steel tube that has the amazing ability to transport liquids and gases from point A to point B. The hypodermic needle is its most commonly recognized representation, often used in medical settings to administer or draw out fluids from humans. In addition, capillary tubes are not limited to this application as they are also employed for chromatography and taking measurements of blood pressure.
The diameter of the average capillary tubing lies between a scant 0.1 and a stout 1.0 mm, but its walls are incredibly delicate, with a thickness of only a few microns. As such, these tubes are highly prone to kinks and ruptures should not be treated with anything less than the utmost delicacy.
To minimize the risk of bending, breaking, or puncturing the walls of a capillary tube, support must be given at both its ends, and it should not be excessively twisted or sharpened as it reaches the target area. When maneuvering the tube into a vein or artery, attentiveness is essential to ensure that it does not inadvertently pierce the vessel.
Once the tube is correctly situated, the chosen substance can be administered or resulting fluids can be withdrawn with a syringe. During the injection procedure, the plunger needs to be eased back progressively to prevent destruction of either the organ or the reservoir. If attempting to extract liquid, it should be done gradually at first and then increased speed as the pipe starts to fill up with liquid.
In the event of a kinked or broken tube, extract it from the vessel and replace it with a brand new one. Remove any remnants of the tube should it have split, prior to inserting a fresh one.
The advantages of capillary tubes are wide-reaching, however when utilized ineffectively, troubles may arise. These problems could manifest in the form of a punctured vessel, or due to a misalignment when placing the tube. A knotting of the tube or a mechanical break may also cause complications. Still, for the most part, capillary tubes are essentially safe and reliable.
