316 and 316L stainless steel are two varieties of steel which incorporate molybdenum as a major element. Not only is resistance to corrosion higher in these than regular 304 stainless steel, but they’re particularly robust when exposed to environments where there are chloride ions, such as the salty ocean. Furthermore, these stainless steels can be welded with ease and display increased durability compared to 304L stainless steel when temperatures are high and corrosion may strike.
The prime contrast between 316 and 316L stainless steel lies in their carbon content. When compared to its counterpart, 316L stainless steel contains a less amount of carbon, making it more invulnerable to intergranular corrosion. Further, the lower carbon level means that sensitization – an infirmity that causes fragility due to exposure to high temperatures – is reduced.
316 stainless steel, thanks to its elevated molybdenum content, provides boosted immunity to pitting and crevice deterioration in areas with an abundance of chloride ions.
Although some might assume that 316 stainless steel is entirely impervious to corrosion, this is unfortunately not the case. In fact, under certain environmental conditions, such as when the humidity and temperatures are at their peak, it can still be vulnerable and suffer from the phenomenon of crevice corrosion or pitting.
For optimal corrosion protection, stainless steel should be maintained clean and dry. Moreover, the application of a corrosion-resistant coating like zinc or aluminum is proposed for further prevention.
Despite the fact that 316 stainless steel is naturally more resistant to corrosion than 304 stainless steel, this material isn’t entirely impervious to harm from the environment. Corrosion can still occur when moisture and/or heat levels are high. This occurs in what is commonly known as crevice corrosion, otherwise known as pitting.
To ensure stainless steel stands up to the test of time, it’s important to maintain its cleanliness and dryness. Creating a corrosion-resistant barrier with aluminum or zinc provides an additional layer of protection.
